When
I first read about Sushant’s untimely demise last year, my first instinct was
to read the news again. It seemed impossible for a man of his stature to commit
suicide. But again, What do I know? The only movies of him I had seen were PK
and Raabta. Attributing to the general disinterest in Hindi movies and people
related, I had known very few, not so good, details about his life outside of
his movies.
Over the past year, I have learned so much
about not just Sushant, but also Bollywood in general. The actor who was
passionate and choosy was portrayed as arrogant, not to mention the blinds
about a skirt chasing creep. Yes, I whole heartedly agree that I am ashamed about
the impression I had on him until he died. But, in my defense, film industry,
especially Hindi, behind all those glitz and glam, hasn’t had an healthy environment
for a long time.
Some
25 years ago, the day my mom turned off the TV and try to educate us that Bollywood
is rotten, we as kids hated her for controlling us. It is a story for another
day of how she recognized the Bollywood for who they are. Even with my limited knowledge,
I could not shake the feeling if there was something sinister at play. It is an
open secret that Bollywood is friends with questionable people and a simple
Google search will validate my claim .
By
the end of the day, after theories started floating around with twitteratis pointing
at his injuries from the leaked videos and the outrage in SM that followed, I was
curious to learn more about him. First, the compilation of malicious blinds
from one fan in twitter (sorry, can’t recollect the name) was an eye-opening moment.
Not because I was unaware of the filth that surrounds Bollywood, but because they
were pulling hats out of thin air to malign him.
Unsympathetic,
they went ahead and maligned him at his deathbed without remorse. Money and
fame can really screw up one’s moral compass and send them to the path of Dormammu.
Their conscience must have no living essence to malign him to this day. When a
not-so-good actress said, “repeat after me.. “, she never would have imagined
that his old and new fans combined, have been repeating every day and fighting
for his justice.
In
a nutshell, the Sushant before and the Sushant after, the contrast is too much
to comprehend. If Badshahs and Begums of Bollywood are still wondering why
people strongly stand by Sushant, they are far too disconnected from this world.
The more I read about Sushant, the more I connected with him. I am fairly sure
all the warriors fighting for him feel the same, i.e., he is one of them; not a
movie star, but a brother, a friend, a son, or anyone they can relate to. We
live in a world where we face bullying, jingoism, nepotism, and it has impacted
them on a personal and/or professional level, and they relate to Sushant based
on those instances too. And most importantly, not everyone has sold their souls
to the Devil.
In
my opinion, after reading about his last perilous year, whatever circumstances
his death occured, the fault lies entirely on Bollywood. He believed in Bollywood
and it betrayed him!
